Resource Smart

ReSourceSmart is an innovative team developing a smart urban waste collection system with separation of recyclable materials at the source, based on the D2P (Door-to-Point) method. The solution aims to transform the way cities collect household waste by addressing key challenges of existing recycling systems, such as low citizen participation, poor material separation, and the limited use of data to improve waste collection.

The system is based on a smart and closed waste collection infrastructure that includes the existing bins for different categories of materials, such as paper, plastic, metal, glass, organic waste, and used cooking oils. Citizens access the system through a digital platform and a QR code identification system, enabling secure use of the infrastructure while also collecting data about user participation and recycling habits.

In addition, the infrastructure integrates fill-level sensors and a digital monitoring system, allowing municipalities to monitor bin status in real time and optimize waste collection scheduling. This approach reduces unnecessary waste truck routes, lowers operational costs, and decreases emissions associated with waste transportation.

The data collected by the system can be used to develop data-driven waste management policies, enhance citizen participation, and improve the quality of recyclable materials. At the same time, new opportunities are created for incentive schemes and awareness initiatives that encourage citizens to participate more actively in recycling.

ReSourceSmart aims for the D2P method to become a comprehensive solution for modern cities, combining smart infrastructure, digital technologies, and circular economy principles to increase recycling rates and create a more sustainable and efficient urban waste management system.
